Dear St. Edward Parish School Community,
“Let your hope keep you joyful, be patient in your troubles and pray at all times.” Romans 12:12 Our 2022-2023 yearly theme focused on three important values that we, as a St. Edward community, try to practice in our daily lives at school: Joy, Patience and Prayer. Our students exemplify joy every single day through their excited voices at recess, the smiles on their faces as they see a friend in the hall, or their thrill as they win a track meet or volleyball match. Our teachers display joy through the passion for the subjects they teach, the art they create, or the books they read to students, big and small. And our families certainly show joy through our many events and fellowship opportunities, be it weekly Friday Mass, our fundraising events, or our many community events, like Mother-Son Bowling, the Father-Daughter Dance, or Movie Night. Patience is an important virtue in living a Catholic life. Through it, we learn self-control, tolerance, calmness, and ultimately trust in the Lord. Our students practice patience as they learn a new concept or wait quietly once they finish an assignment. Our faculty and teachers exude patience as they work with students and their individual personalities and aptitudes in order to help them achieve their personal best. Parents display patience every day as they wait in car line (despite our best efforts!), deal with freeway traffic, and of course, just being a mom or a dad to young children!

Like the church, St. Edward Parish School is more than a building. It is the people who form the foundation - the rock - of our faith-filled community. Forty-two years later, our school continues to grow and thrive because of our loving and supportive families, staff, volunteers, parishioners, grandparents, and supporters. Time and again, ask a new family or a veteran parent, and the sense of community is our endearing strength. It is what continues to make our school a second home a place of learning, growth, faith, values and, most importantly, unforgettable memories!
Mother-Son Bowling Bash Strike! In March, Monarch moms and their sons hit the lanes for an afternoon of bowling at Saddleback Lanes. Dressed in their favorite sports jerseys, the duos enjoyed some friendly competition and bonded with friends over spares, strikes, and gutter balls.
This year, we brought back some time-honored traditions like PGO Movie Night and the father-daughter and mother-son events. We also introduced new community opportunities, such as the Bike-to-School ride. We proudly continue our community events to be occasions that involve no fundraising in order to streamline and limit the number of times we ask our parents to donate or contribute financially. We look forward to offering more community events during the upcoming school year. Be sure to check our school calendar for opportunities to get involved in the Monarch community.
Father-Daughter Winter Wonderland Dance Monarch dads treated their daughters to a special night out at the Winter Wonderland Father-Daughter dance. The magical winter evening was filled with dancing, face painting, a scavenger hunt, snowball fight, photo booth fun, and candybar. Thank you to the countless volunteers who decorated the gym, planned the details, and ensured the event was a success.

Bike to School Day Monarchs celebrated National Bike to School Day on Wednesday, May 17 with an inaugural community bike ride departing from two central locations North Beach Metrolink in San Clemente and Los Rios Park in San Juan Capistrano. Riders from both starting locations converged on the San Juan Creek Trail, taking it to the Dana Point Community Center. The students and families then walked their bikes on the sidewalk up the steep Calle La Primavera hill, finishing at St. Edward school just in time for school.
“We had over 90 students and 30 parents participate, along with immense support from the San Juan Capistrano, Dana Point, and San Clemente divisions of the OC Sheriff Department. Unforgettable memories were made for parents, students, and staff, and we hope to continue this tradition each May for years to come.” In addition to working to create safer bicycle and walking routes, the Bike to School Day event aimed to emphasize the importance of physical activity among children, cyclist, and pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concerns for the environment, and strengthening family and community connections.
MONARCH COMMUNITY COFFEE Since its start in 2018, the monthly Monarch Community Coffee events give parents a casual social opportunity after select Friday Masses to chat with other parents and administrators while enjoying coffee and light breakfast fare. A special thank you to Coffee Importers (located in the Dana Point Harbor) for providing the coffee for the program. Hope to see you at a future coffee!

ST. EDWARD TH E CO NFESSO R NE W PASTO RA L C E NTE R & KN I GHT HA L L For over 20 years, St. Edward parishioners and its pastoral leadership have dreamed of expanding its parish office and Knight Hall to better serve the growing and active St. Edward community. The project broke ground in June 2021, and after 18 months, the stunning Pastoral Center and Knight Hall opened its doors to parishioners. The expansion allows the school and church to better serve its community through flexible meeting and event rooms, Mass overflow space, staff offices, and gathering areas for community fellowship. All who visit are reminded of God’s beauty through the bluff’s spectacular ocean views!

During the 2023-2024 academic year, St. Edward school will use the space for an advanced math class and for various meetings. Future plans include hosting Monarch Giving Night, Monarch Main Event, and the 8th grade graduation banquet in the Pastoral Center.
The Narthax was completed by the son of the artist who designed the original five glass panes. The Narthax now has a total of 22 stained glass panes.

Two New Priests Join the St. Edward Community

Ordained in June 2018 by Bishop Vann, Fr. Aristotle comes to St. Edward the Confessor from San Francisco Solano Catholic Church in Rancho Santa Margarita. Here are a few facts:
Ordained originally as a priest for the Military Diocese of Peru, Fr. Mauro was recently at St. Irenaeus Catholic Church in Cypress. Here are some fun facts:
Hometown and Education: I am an Orange County native, growing up in Tustin and Irvine. I attended all Irvine schools: Westwood Basics Plus (elementary), Sierra Vista Middle School, and Northwood High School. About Fr. Aristotle’s Family: I am the youngest of three brothers. All our names start with an A. Their names are Alexander and Anthony. They are both married. My mom is Eleanor and my dad is George. My parents live in Tustin and my brothers live in Irvine and Westminster. Hobbies: I love to take walks, practice my guitar, watch stand-up comedy, and spend time with friends and family. Fun Fact: I have traveled to Jerusalem, Lourdes, Japan, China, Spain, Ireland, and France. Favorite Part About Being Catholic: My favorite part of my job is being available to minister to people. I love that this is the Church that Jesus has given to us in order for us to be truly happy and fully alive in this world until the next life in heaven.
Hometown and Education: I was born in Huaraz, Peru and then at the age of six, we migrated to the capital of Peru-Lima. I did my primary, secondary studies, and university studies in Lima, Peru. While studying to become a teacher, I found my vocation to the priesthood. I studied philosophy and theology at the Seminary Mayor Saint Joseph in Peru. I was ordained as a priest for the Military Diocese of Peru. After my ordination, I was chaplain of the Air Force, a professor of the pilots of the Air Force, and I studied for a licentiate in educational management. When I arrived in the United States, I was assigned to Immaculate Heart of Mary parish in Santa Ana and then most recently to Saint Irenaeus in Cypress. Family: My family is very Catholic. I have five sisters I am the only brother in the family! Hobbies: I like to play sports (one of my favorites is soccer), read, research current events, and run. Fun Fact: I am cheerful and I like to laugh. Favorite Part About Being Catholic: Being Catholic gives me the opportunity to express my faith and my true self. Being Catholic is in the Eucharist. As a priest, I enjoy teaching, preaching and sanctifying at all times for the glory of God, especially serving and accompanying the family.

MONARCH THEATER RETURNS
In the eagerly awaited spring of 2023, St. Edward Parish School brought back the magic of live theater with its production of “Alice in Wonderland.” The performances marked a significant milestone as it was the school’s first spring musical since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Also noteworthy, the production was the inaugural performance in the newly constructed Fr. Knight Hall.

The choice of “Alice in Wonderland” as the featured production was fitting, as it transported audiences into a whimsical and fantastical world. Over four performances, the talented cast and crew of 60 students spanning all grade levels entertained the audience with beautiful solos, duets, and ensemble performances. Congratulations to all the Monarch thespians, and thank you to the many parent volunteers who helped bring the production to life!

MONARCH MILEAGE CLUB Started in early February 2023, the Monarch Mileage Club was developed to create another physical lunchtime activity for St. Edward students. Students from 1st through 8th grade enthusiastically signed up, with 225 students participating.
By the end of the school year, these students impressively ran about 10,093 laps, equating to approximately 1,312 miles!
Each participating student received an EZ scan card on a lanyard. After each lunchtime lap, they scanned their card on an iPad. At the end of the school year, students were asked to return their scan card in exchange for a personalized certificate documenting how many miles they cumulatively ran. In addition, the program awarded prizes as they achieved specific mile milestones. Fifty-two students were awarded the coveted ten-mile (80 lap) club shirts at the end of the school year. Other milestone awards included a wrist bracelet for runners who passed 30 miles and unique commemorative toe tokens for those that ran more than 40, 50, 60, and 70 miles. Congratulations to Gio Zand who was the top runner, achieving 70 miles! The Monarch Mileage Club will continue this coming school year as we continue to provide opportunities that keep our students active, promote goal-setting and character, and unite grade levels to create a stronger community. STREAM NIGHT
WONDERS OF WEATHER
After a three-year hiatus, St. Edward was thrilled to host once again its annual STREAM night, an evening of hands-on science, math, art, and engineering activities for families to complete together. Focused on the theme “Wonders of Weather,” the community event included science classroom activities and student science projects that looked at the effects of weather on daily life and the surrounding physical
environment. Projects included windsocks, rain sticks, lightning in a jar, baking soda rainbows, and magic snow. In addition to the science projects, guest speaker Mr. Liam Kennedy spoke about ISS-Above, a single-board computer device he invented that presents live information about the International Space Station, including live video views of the earth. This technology is available in over 4,500 locations worldwide, including private homes, schools, and science centers. Using funds from Monarch Giving Day, ISS-Above is now available in the Makerspace classroom, where students can view live video of Earth from the external cameras on the International Space Station. From 250 miles up, that is quite a view!

Academic Decathlon Wins Local and State Championships For the 13th year, the St. Edward Academic Decathlon team placed first in the 2023 Diocese of Orange Academic Junior High Decathlon. Following months of hard work, dedication, and team studying events, the St. Edward team competed with at least one dozen other Diocesan schools at Santa Margarita Catholic High School. Based on the first-place Diocesan performance, the Monarch team progressed to the state finals, where they proudly also took first place, an honor they have won nine times! Academic Decathlon is an academic competition designed for Catholic students in 6th to 8th grade. Ten events take place within the one-day competition. Two events are collaborative team efforts, including the 8,000-point Logic Quiz and the 8,000-point Super Quiz. The other eight events are individual events that are each worth 1,000 points, including Religion, English and Spelling, Literature, Science, Mathematics, Current Events, Social Studies, and Fine Arts (Art and/or Music). The 10 team members work together on the Logic Quiz and the Super Quiz. Eight team members also take individual tests, and two team members are designated as the Membersat-Large who only compete in the team events. The team prepared for this competition over the summer through logic puzzle exercises. In September, they start studying their individual subject focuses. During the months leading up to the competition, the decathletes study weekly, including Sunday practice sessions with family potlucks where parents and kids compete in a friendly logic competition. Decathlon is truly a family and community affair!

On Friday, January 27, 2023, St. Edward kicked off Catholic Schools Week by welcoming hundreds of special guests to our school for the annual Grandparents & Special Friends Day. The morning began in prayer, as grandparents, special friends, students, and faculty celebrated Mass together. Following Mass, all guests proceeded to the new Pastoral Center where they enjoyed a light breakfast and fellowship. Guests then toured the campus, visited classrooms, met the teachers, took photos, and shopped at the book fair. The campus was abuzz with activity and energy as different generations came together to celebrate Catholic schools. We look forward to welcoming everyone again on Friday, January 26, 2024.

St. Edward Parish School supporters gathered on April 22, 2023 for the school’s annual Monarch Main Event (MME). The Havana Nights gala was held under the stars at the Inn at San Juan Capistrano. The sell-out crowd of more than 400 guests was treated to a colorful evening featuring gourmet Cuban-inspired food stations, a hosted bar of wine, beer, champagne, and a signature Mojito cocktail, live entertainment by The Adelaide Tropical Band, dancing, and a live auction. The event exceeded expectations, netting just over $176,000! Proceeds were used to fulfill a longstanding wish of families and staff - replacing the entire grass field with premium turf, similar to what is used on college and professional practice and stadium fields due to its durability. In addition, contributions were used to enhance school security resources. The school installed external security cameras in new locations and replaced older cameras inside the school building with upgraded models. Additionally, 3M window film was installed to provide resistance against forced entry and mitigate hazards from shattered glass during a natural disaster. Thank you to everyone who supported the Monarch Main Event, certainly one of the highlights of the year. A heartfelt thanks to our MME planning committee, including our co-chairs Mrs. Karen Finnigan and Mrs. Whitney Tioleco who chaired the event for a second year in a row. Also, a special thank you to our sponsors, underwriters, auction donors, and volunteers - without your support, the event simply would not happen!
What Is The Monarch Main Event Monarch Main Event (MME) is St. Edward Parish School’s most well-known and beloved fundraiser. Each year, MME fundraises for a specific program or project for the school. Over the years, some of the programs that have benefitted from the annual gala include campus-wide technology upgrades, a facilities maintenance cart, an on-field athletic scoreboard, campus security upgrades, the purchase of a ceramics kiln, and playground shade awnings. Since 2014, MME has raised more than $1.7 million for St. Edward Parish School. The net proceeds of the event average $160,000 per year.

The Monarch Annual Fund is St. Edward Parish School’s most important fundraising priority. The annual fund generates necessary resources for many critical areas, including tuition assistance, professional development, student experiences, and campus improvements. We happily donate to the school because we want to directly impact the resources and services available to all St. Edward’s students. South Orange County is a competitive academic environment. St. Edward’s diocesan component and culture create a unique experience for our children to grow and thrive during these formative years. Having a competitive curriculum, engaged and experienced faculty, campus security, and a nurturing religious foundation simply requires a great deal of funding. Continue the Legacy of the Gift of Catholic Education The San Felipe de Jesus Scholarship, initially granted by the Al and Mary Ann Schoellerman Foundation, was established by their estate as loyal supporters of Catholic education. Lovingly known as Granny, Mary Ann wished her legacy would ensure a Christ-centered, quality education that instills values and lasts a lifetime, while creating opportunities that change lives. Significant seed money was granted to St. Edward Parish School to establish a tuition assistance program to bestow the gift of Catholic education to deserving students from lower-income and underrepresented families who are active parishioners at San Felipe de Jesus or St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church. This initial generous donation provided a nine-year foundation for the San Felipe de Jesus Scholarship Fund,

but the program needs to be supported with additional monetary gifts to ensure its sustainability for years to come! Since 2018, more than 25 students have benefitted from the scholarship program. St. Edward Parish School is honored to be among the many philanthropic organizations supported through the Schoellerman’s private foundation. The Schoellerman’s philanthropic legacy includes Sacred Heart Seminary in Mubende, Uganda, the good works of Bishop Carl Fisher, JF Shea Therapeutic Riding Center, Hoag Hospital, Second Harvest Food Bank, and Smile Train.

Until you experience St. Edward graduation week, you cannot grasp how special of a time it is for the graduates and their families and friends. The 76 graduates from the Class of 2023 began their festivities on Tuesday, May 30th, with a yearbook signing breakfast, and a graduation dance that night. The awards banquet was celebrated the evening of Wednesday, May 31. The valedictorians and salutatorians were announced at the awards banquet to boisterous applause. Three valedictorians were awarded the highest academic honor for the first time in St. Edward Parish School’s history. Hunter Hughes, Mercer Pringle, and Daniel Wadman stood proudly to accept the prestigious award. Also recognized
were the salutatorians Ciaran Cervenak and Mary Jane Hedges. The five students were given a standing ovation from their classmates. At last, Thursday, June 1, was the formal graduation ceremony. The ceremony was a memorable event filled with joy and pride. Graduates, their families, friends, and faculty gathered to celebrate the students’ accomplishments. The ceremony featured a special Mass, the awarding of diplomas, and heartfelt farewells as the graduates embarked on their next journey. It was a special day for the Class of 2023, marking the end of their K-8 years and the beginning of new adventures.

A Historic Trip for the
Class of 2023
St. Edward Parish School’s annual trip to Washington, DC was an exciting and educational adventure that took place over the course of a week. In addition to visiting Washington, DC, the students visited Williamsburg, VA and Philadelphia, PA. While in DC, the students had the opportunity to explore all the major historical and cultural sites in the nation’s capital. From the iconic landmarks like the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial to the world-renowned museums such as the
VIETNAM MEMORIAL TRADITION A special tradition of the 8th grade east coast trip is the Vietnam Memorial project. Prior to the trip, each student is given a POW (Prisoner of War) bracelet, bearing the name and information of a soldier who had served during the Vietnam War. The students researched their POW and then wrote a note to the POW’s family. While in DC at the Vietnam Memorial, the students located the soldier on the wall, and each student left their heartfelt notes to honor the fallen POWs. The notes served as a tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of these soldiers.
Smithsonian, the students were immersed in the rich history and culture of the United States. The east coast trip held particular significance for the graduating 8th graders. They embarked on this journey just one week before their much-anticipated graduation festivities. It served as a fitting and memorable prelude to their graduation, allowing them to bond with their classmates, reflect on their St. Edward Parish School journey, and create lasting memories together.

St. Edward Class of 2019 - College Send-Off Mass & Dinner Several families started a new tradition this past summer to celebrate the lifelong friendships and connections made at St. Edward, sending off the newly graduated high school students with a celebratory Mass, blessings, and dinner before the former Monarchs headed off to college just days later. With more than 25 alumni students
proudly wearing their college sweatshirts, Fr. Aristotle blessed them on their college journey at the end of a special Sunday Mass in their honor. All the families later gathered on the bluff for dinner and dessert to share memories of their St. Edward days and how it provided the foundation for their next four years. #AlwaysAMonarch
Lindsay Hughes ’19 Named JSerra Valedictorian Lindsey Hughes ‘19 was named JSerra High School’s Class of 2023 valedictorian, graduating with a 4.79 GPA. Over the past four years, she took nine Advanced Placement classes and 14 honors classes. She served as a four-year member of the Engineering Magnet program and a National Honor Society officer. Lindsay also was a three-sport athlete, competing in soccer, swimming, and on the CIF-championship women’s water polo team. One of the highlights of her four years as a Lion was traveling to Peru for the JSerra service trip, where she built houses, played with orphans, and ministered to the poor.
Lindsay is currently attending the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she is majoring in engineering.
Teacher Dr. Kilduff commented, “Lindsay was one of those students everyone wants as a partner due to her work ethic and dedication supporting her fellow students on engineering projects. You knew she would share the workload, offer a variety of ideas, and never give up, instead putting in her best effort until the project deadline. Her actions with fellow engineering students clearly demonstrated the virtues of responsibility, trustworthiness, and perseverance.” Teachers echoed this sentiment about her enviable work ethic and industriousness but also mentioned her soft dignity, grace, warm disposition, and humility.
SMCHS Caritas Christi Award Goes to Charlie Jennison ’19 For 25 years, Santa Margarita Catholic High School (SMCHS) has presented its esteemed Caritas Christi award to the student who best embodies the school’s charism of Caritas Christi - the love of Christ - and its virtues of compassion, humility, justice, and goodness. Charlie Jennison ‘19 was this year’s recipient and was presented the award at Senior Awards Night in May. Regina Bork, an SMCHS science teacher, former St. Edward parent and 7th and 8th grade biology and chemistry instructor, commented, “Charlie Jennison embodies Caritas Christi in every ounce of his being. From the moment I met Charlie as a prospective middle schooler at my former school, I knew he was special. Charlie’s love for the Lord, his family, friends, and all of God’s creations is apparent in everything he does. “Charlie sees the positive side of every situation because he truly believes there is good to be found in everything.” In addition to a plaque, SMCHS awarded Charlie $3,000 for his college tuition and, at Charlie’s request, $2,000 to Faith & Family Life Catholic Ministries, a non-profit founded by former SMCHS chaplain Fr. Tim Donovan. Charlie is taking a year off to travel and explore his passions further. He will attend Texas Christian University in the fall of 2024.

» What year did you graduate from St. Edward Parish School? I graduated from St. Edward Parish School in 1998.
» Where did you go to high school and college after St. Edward? After St. Edward, I went to Santa Margarita Catholic High School (Class of 2002), Harvard University (Class of 2006), and Kellogg School of Management (Class of 2013).
» Why did you choose St. Edward Parish School for your family? While the toddler years with our first child were filled with many first-time parent uncertainties, deciding where our oldest son would go to school was crystal clear. Besides attending St. Edward as a child from kindergarten through 8th grade, my history with the community began even earlier. My parents joined as parishioners when they moved to California over 40 years ago, and I was baptized at St. Edward church as a baby. My husband and I were married at St. Edward 12 years ago, and we joined as parishioners when we moved back home from Chicago when our son was born. I stayed connected with St. Edward even after moving out of state as my mother, Julie Mildrew, was a teacher at the school. She began assisting in the computer lab when I was in the 7th grade and continued teaching as a director of the technology department for over 25 years. I always enjoyed visiting her at school while I was in town and seeing how the little school that I went to as a child had grown.
» What is your favorite memory from being a student at St. Edward?
There are so many great memories from being a student at St. Edward - it’s hard to pick just one! I have many wonderful memories from field trips like 6th grade science camp, the many plays and pageants, and family events like Fiesta. But I think my favorite one is from our 8th grade graduation banquet. It was such a special evening celebrating together as a family. Many of us had been together since kindergarten, so my classmates felt like brothers and sisters, and their families felt like my own. We cried and laughed as we recollected our favorite experiences at St. Ed. While we were excited 14-year-olds looking forward to high school, we were also sad to leave our special community.
» What impact did St. Edward Parish School have on you as a child and now as an adult?
My faith in God blossomed during my time at St. Edward. I’m so grateful that I was able to have a spiritual education in addition to my academic education. Whether it’s the sacraments I received at St. Edward, Friday school Masses, religion classes, or the many moments praying together as a community, my time at St. Edward gave me a strong spiritual foundation that has helped me get through challenges as an adult.
» What is your favorite part of being a parent at St. Edward? My favorite part of being a parent at St. Edward is the peace and comfort I have every day, knowing the love and support my children receive. The teachers and administrators do an incredible job of making every student feel safe and special. Sending your kiddos away to school is such an emotional experience, especially in today’s world. I feel so lucky to have teachers and administrators that I respect and trust watching over my kids. It’s everything you pray for as a parent.
» What has been your family’s favorite school event? There have been so many wonderful school events that our family has loved. We always look forward to the special events around the holidays, such as the Halloween parade and Christmas pageant. Another favorite event was the Spring Musical that our oldest son Grayson participated in last year. I’m so grateful for the school’s wide range of activities and programs.
» What is the most meaningful to you at St. Edward? The most meaningful part of St. Edward is the incredible community of families. Even though it’s been over 25 years since I was a student there, the love across this community and the shared core values remain the same. We are so grateful to go on this parenting journey with families we consider dear friends. Our friendships extend beyond school as we play sports, celebrate birthdays together, and so much more. This community of families has been and continues to be the heart and soul of the school. We feel so fortunate to be part of the St. Edward family.

A FOND FAREWELL Mrs. Janelle Hamm | Lower School Principal Mrs. Janelle Hamm joined the St. Edward community in 2016 as a 2nd grade teacher. She later became the Lower School Principal in 2021 and served in the role for two years. As a core member of the school’s administration team, Mrs. Hamm exemplified unwavering dedication, professionalism, and a genuine commitment to the students’ academic and personal growth. Her passion for student success was contagious, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of countless students, parents, and staff members alike. Whether implementing new teaching methodologies, fostering a nurturing environment, or instilling a strong sense of discipline and integrity, Mrs. Hamm consistently went beyond the call of duty. Her leadership and collaborative spirit were instrumental in shaping St. Edward Parish School into the thriving community it is today. Mrs. Hamm mentored students and teachers alike, providing guidance and support during both triumphs and challenges. We wish Mrs. Hamm continued success and blessings as she and her husband relocated to Pennsylvania this summer to be closer to her aging parents.

» How many years total was your family at St. Edward? 11 years
» Why did you choose Catholic education for your family? Mike and I come from large, strong Catholic families and attended Catholic schools from elementary school through college. With this upbringing and a commitment to our faith, and the belief that a Catholic school education for our boys would strengthen their religious conviction and promote the right values as they become men, we chose the path of Catholic education.
» Why did you choose St. Edward Parish School? In 2005, we moved from Manhattan Beach to Dana Point. We immediately found our religious home at St. Edward the Confessor church. In August 2012, Fionan, our oldest son, started kindergarten at the school, and our triplet sons started pre-k. Having children at all different learning levels, St. Edward’s fostered the belief that children with different educational needs have a right to a faith-based education. They supported our fundamental beliefs and helped all our boys succeed. The school was associated with the parish church and had an excellent reputation. In interviews with the administration and conversations with other parents and friends, it became clear that what the school delivered from a Catholic and overall perspective was exactly what we sought: to support parents in laying the foundation for these boys to become good Catholic men and put them on a path to heaven.
» What activities were your kids/and your family involved in at St. Edward?
I volunteered in various capacities over the years, including serving as a substitute school nurse, helping teachers weekly in the classroom, and attending field trips and special classroom events like Apple Day and St. Patrick’s Day for when the “leprechauns” came. For the last five years, I was on the Parent Guild Organization, helped with MME, and chaired PGO Perks, which focused on monthly teacher appreciation. I will especially miss my drives to Julian each November to gather apple pies for all the staff and wrap Christmas presents for their families. The boys were also involved in many activities, most notably altar serving, a tradition that started when Fionan was in 5th grade in 2017. The Cervenak boys have served at least
one Sunday Mass monthly at St. Edward the Confessor for over six years. They also were active in school sports, with Mike helping to coach a few of those teams, Academic Decathlon, and school performances.
» What was the most memorable school moment(s) for your family?
Lasting memories include the kindergarten graduation ceremonies, Halloween parades, St. Edward friend teams at Dana Point Youth Baseball, the costumed children during Immigration Day, the cherubs in their finest for First Holy Communion, Friday Masses, and promotions to the next grade level at the end of each school year. Other highlights include the talent shows and musicals, the overnight experience on the Pilgrim, the bitter cold and historical re-enactment at Riley’s Farm, the Christmas choruses, Gold Dust or Bust, Walk Through the American Revolution, In-N-Out burger days, Stations of the Cross with the 8th graders, Monarch Main Events and the post-events at Turk’s, the Washington DC trip for the triplets (with me as a chaperone), and chatting with friends in the afternoon car line while waiting for the kids to come out.
» What was your family’s favorite school event? In the years when it was available, our entire family enjoyed going to and working at the Fiesta. Without a doubt, these few days on the calendar were the social capstone of the year, starting on Friday afternoon and ending around mid-afternoon on Sunday. The boys were more focused on challenging

S UN S E T FA MI L I ES themselves on the scary rides with their friends and going crazy on candy, while we, as parents, enjoyed the famous sangria, ran games, and worked in the food sales areas. We all enjoyed great times with the kids and parents, becoming close friends with many of them, and we are fortunate that many of these treasures last to this day. “Fiesta” ranked at the top of the things all of our graduating 8th graders wished to note in their final awards dinners in 2021 and 2023.

I would often go grab breakfast afterward with other moms, and it will remain myfavorite day for all these reasons.
» What is most meaningful to you at St. Edward?
» What was your family’s favorite school tradition? Grandparents Day ranks at the top of the list! The Cervenaks, combined with the Hennesseys, Ibarras, and Currans, were always blessed by the attendance of Gamma and Grandpa Curran, who held the record and bragging rights for the number of grandchildren (11 total) in the school for several years. However, our most cherished tradition was the weekly Friday Mass. I would try to get the boys to sit with me, which
Although Fionan graduated in May 2021, and the triplets graduated in May 2023, our time at St. Edward marked significant milestones in the education and growth of our sons. All have moved on to high school equipped with solid educational foundations and a greater knowledge and appreciation of their Catholic faith due to our wonderful decision years ago to send the boys to St. Edward the Confessor Parish School.
Sunset Families Each year we recognize the families who end their journey at St. Edward Parish School with their youngest child graduating from the school. We said farewell to 48 families from the Class of 2023. Many of these families spent more than 12 years together spanning multiple children at St. Edward. The Sunset Parents were invited to a breakfast in May to celebrate the completion of their journey as Monarch parents. It was a beautiful morning full of stories from their time at the school.
